How to Host

If you enjoy great food, good conversations, and a bit of a challenge, hosting a Lincoln-Douglass Dinner is for you! We can help you choose an interesting and balanced group of guests, identify topics of discussion, and prepare for the dinner.

-
Food: Good things come from great food!!! Find dishes which allow you to be at the table more and in the kitchen less and be sure to include dessert!
-
Choosing Guests: Pick guests from diverse perspectives and backgrounds including but not limited to political, racial, religious, professions and age. I have found 6-10 guests to be ideal.
-
Name Cards: Name cards make all of the difference and allow you to seat guests with different perspectives and opinions across from each other to encourage conversations.
-
Discussion Prep: Choose two or three topics to discuss and email your guests five days in advance with a short description of each topic along with a few question prompts. I have often included links to articles I have read or websites I have visited related to the topic.
-
Start of Your Lincoln-Douglass Dinner: At the start of the evening, welcome your guests and gently remind them of the goal to enjoy the meal while “peeling back the onion” on important topics. As the facilitator, it is your job to keep the conversation moving and the guests civil and respectful.
